Friend of Silvio Horta pens powerful account of TV exec’s battles with meth

A friend of Silvio Horta has penned a lengthy and powerful account of the TV showrunner’s battles with addiction. Andy Maher, who’d known Horta since 2010, wrote the piece for the Advocate.

Maher not only wanted to share memories of the talented man he knew but also to alert other gay men to the dangers of meth.

Horta, who created the hit TV show Ugly Betty, took his own life earlier this month.

Maher says he and Horta hit it off immediately after a mutual friend introduced them on a skiing vacation. They became good friends and began working together, coming up with ideas and stories to pitch to networks.

Maher knew that Horta had had problems with alcohol and drugs, but it was around a year into their friendship that Horta revealed he was addicted to meth.

Maher says until this point, he knew little about the drug.

“I learned that meth is certainly not a drug just for people in trailer parks. It is incredibly prevalent in all parts of society, and particularly in gay culture. Statistically, gay men are four times more likely than straight men to try it.

“It is also one of the most addictive single substances known to man, if not the most addictive. People can become addicted after a single dose, and once people form a dependency, the chances for recovery are shockingly low.”

Horta would go absent for periods of time, impacting on his ability to meet work deadlines. Friends and family staged an intervention and Horta subsequently went into rehab for 30 days.

Once he returned, he appeared committed to staying clean. He and Maher began working on a new project, which developed into The Curse of the Fuentes Women, which was picked by NBC.

However, as the pressure began to build to deliver the show, Horta relapsed, throwing the whole project into jeopardy.

“Our relationship did begin to stray after that experience,” recalls Maher. “I realized I wouldn’t be able to count on him much longer. After a few more projects, we amicably separated the business part of our relationship.”

“But we never stopped being friends. His struggles continued … in and out of rehab. Binge, recover. Binge, recover. Binge even longer, recover for weeks. A vicious cycle I’d already witnessed up close and personal too many times.”

A few months later, Maher says Horta became frantic. He told Maher he’d developed a condition known as ‘anhedonia’: a total inability to experience joy or pleasure. It’s a condition noted to affect long-term meth users. Horta told Maher he’d been contemplating suicide, to the point of researching methods.

Maher says Horta eventually decided to leave Los Angeles to go live with his mum and sister in Miami, so they could watch over him. Before he left LA, he gave away a lot of his possessions to friends – a gesture that concerned Maher.

“When he hugged me goodbye, he told me it might be the last time we ever saw each other. I genuinely thought that was ludicrous and told him so. ‘Just go to Miami, stay with your mom, heal, take the time, and I’ll see you soon.’”

However, he says that whenever they texted or spoke after that, Horta was depressed and said his brain was not getting any better.

On January, 7, Horta’s sister, Hilda, contacted Maher to tell him her brother was missing.

“I was on Facetime with Hilda and Mama H [Horta’s mom] when they found them: a stack of letters, each addressed to his family and his closest friends. And one to me. Suicide notes. In that instant, Mama H started wailing a deep, violent, agonized scream. I never want to hear anything like that again for as long as I live.”

Through tracing his credit card, Horta was later tracked down to a nearby hotel. He had taken his own life.

Horta’s story should serve as a wake-up call to anyone who dabbles with meth or who is concerned about their drug use. His passing has left his family and friends devastated. Maher misses his friend greatly and is plagued with wondering if there was anything more he could have done to save him.

Yet another super embarrassing tweet from Ivanka Trump completely backfires

Oh, Ivanka, when will you learn?

Yesterday, the first daughter took to Twitter to scold people who “consistently make fun of half the country and then complain that it is divided.” And, no, she wasn’t talking about her father.

The first daughter was directing her ire at CNN anchor Don Lemon and two pundits who burst into fits of laughter during live coverage of Trump’s impeachment proceedings Saturday night when discussing that time Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got schooled by an NPR reporter.

“The arrogance, mocking accents and smug ridicule of this nation’s ‘Real Elites’ is disgusting,” Ivanka raged.

As usual, people had a lot to say about Miss Ivanka’s tweet.

Shall we take a look?

Did Adam Driver drag out his SNL monologue to cut transphobic skit?

If you’re a fan of Adam Driver’s brooding intensity, you probably enjoyed his recent hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. But a line during his opening monologue, interpreted by the live audience as a joke, is now making fans wonder — was a transphobic skit really slated to close out the show?

It’s tough to say, but the evidence could point to the possibility that a sketch was cut from the close of the show due to time. The episode ended with musical guest Halsey’s second performance, which breaks from the typical run of show.

And then there’s Adam’s monologue, which taken at face value, says outright that the mystery sketch made the host uncomfortable.

Related: RuPaul to host Saturday Night Live for the first time

“I’m just trying to drag this out because honestly at the end of the show, there’s a sketch I really don’t like, so I’m hoping this goes long and it’ll get cut,” he said, adding: “I play a woman in it, and I can’t tell if it’s transphobic or just really dated.”

The comment got a laugh from the audience, as it fit in with the monologue’s overall theme.

You can watch it below. The remark comes at the 3:52 mark:

Many viewers praised the move:

While others were less convinced:

Still… we find it odd that the episode ended with a musical number instead of a sketch.

Then again, Driver’s monologue clocked in at a very average 5 minutes — here’s a rundown of the last five opening monologue lengths:

Eddie Murphy – 6:02

Scarlett Johansson – 5:00

Jennifer Lopez – 4:54

Will Farrell – 6:11

Harry Styles – 4:45

And to that end, why would he wait until air time to voice his reservations if he felt that strongly about it?

What do you think? Was it a joke or did Driver really vamp to cut a sketch?

Honey Mahogany is perhaps best known for starring in the 5th season of RuPaul‘s Drag Race, distinguishing herself for singing her own songs before being foiled by a gorgeous caftan that somehow failed to impress the judges. Then came the release of the EP Honey Love, where her sultry voice was again on display.

Yet Honey’s greatest accomplishments at the age of 36 may well be out of the limelight. Since the breakthrough Drag Race appearance, she has starred as in another platform altogether: San Francisco politics. Not only did she help establish the city’s commemoration of trans history, the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District, she also serves as a legislative aid to a member of the San Francisco’s board of supervisors, where she advocates for all things LGBTQ.

Honey, who is African-American, identifies as queer and gender-non conforming trans. And she is clear about the inspirations for her boundary-defying identity as well as her advocacy: “San Francisco’s wealth of characters” who inspire locals and visitors alike to “express themselves and push boundaries without fear.”

And express herself she has. Honey can be spotted across the city in a range of productions at iconic locations, always highlighting the city’s gorgeous mosaic of diversity. She starred in shows including Peaches Christ’s The Craft… of Drag! at the Castro Theater and D’Arcy Drollinger’s Star Trek at the Oasis. She also played Scary Spice in a live reading of Spice World at Clusterfest and emceed Topsy Turvy: A Queer Circus Extravaganza. Mahogany has hosted the Castro Street Fair and Mahogany Mondays at the infamous The Castro bar, Midnight Sun.

In 2017, Mahogany and Sister Roma became the regular hosts for the main stage of San Francisco’s enormous pride celebration.

Watch as Honey takes Queerty inside the Stud, champions the unique nightlife of San Francisco, and chats about preserving the legendary queer club for future generations:

After sending ex’s nudes to his mom and grandma, man tries using sex slave contract to avoid penalty

A Detroit man who allegedly sent his ex-lover’s nudes to the victim’s family and friends, including his mother and grandmother, says he’s too broke to pay restitution for his crimes.

The victim, referred to in court documents as “Zachary,” first met a man by the name of Harrison Jason Eugéne Schuller (a.k.a. “Harry”) on Scruff in 2017, where he sent him several nudes as well photos of himself engaging in various sex acts.

According to attorney Kyle Bristow, the two eventually agreed to a virtual “BDSM contract,” in which Zachary would be Schuller’s “slave.”

“Part of their relationship, I guess, it was one of those BDSM types of relationships and Harry had a sex slave contract that he tried to enforce in federal court,” Bristow explains to local media.

The relationship carried on for a while, though the two men never actually met in person. When things eventually fizzled and Zachary terminated the contract, Schuller became irate. He allegedly accused Zachary of owing him $20,000 and began leaving him threatening voicemails.

In one recorded call, Schuller can be heard saying, “Hello. Somedays I am in love with you and somedays I hate you. I am not a nice person. I am mean. I am vengeful. I am not sorry for anything I am going to do to you or your family.”

Shortly after that, Schuller allegedly sent Zachary’s nudes to Zachary’s mother, grandmother, grandfather, cousin, and several of his friends, though he claims he has absolutely no memory of doing this.

“Our client even sought a personal protection order to try and put an end to this nonsense,” says Bristow. “However, Harry continued calling our client.”

That’s when Zachary filed a lawsuit against Schuller for revenge porn.

After being ordered by a judge to pay Zachary restitution, Schuller filed for bankruptcy. While appearing in bankruptcy court earlier this month, he tried using the BDSM contract to get a pending civil case against him thrown out. But the judge said no.

“If you get money judgments against you for revenge pornography, it is going to stick with you for life,” explains bankruptcy attorney Derek Jacques.

Zachary has yet to receive any money from Schuller. Meanwhile, Schuller says he plans on defending himself in his upcoming civil case. A date for that trail has yet to be scheduled.

Michael Bloomberg loves his ice cream, and Big Gay Ice Cream is his favorite.

And however you feel about his late-stage candidacy, it’s nice that he’s speaking about queer issues.

“Over the past three years, the Trump administration has acted to dismantle federal protections and resources for LGBTQ+ Americans, including stripping transgender people of their recognized identities and civil rights and nominating judges and officials with strong anti-LGBTQ+ records,” his plan reads. The ongoing fallout over the Aaron Hernandez-themed documentary Killer Inside on Netflix continues, as Hernandez’s fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins, tells Good Morning America she didn’t know if he had same-sex attraction.

Jenkins and Hernandez began dating in 2007 and had a child together in 2012. They had something of a tumultuous relationship, with Jenkins complaining of Hernandez’s infidelities. She stood by Hernandez during his trial and conviction for the murder of his friend, Odin Lloyd. The couple never married before Hernandez’s suicide in 2017. Jenkins also continues to believe in Hernandez’s innocence.

Reality star responds to being outed by castmate on live TV, says “I thought it was really gross”

Weeks after being outed by her castmate on live television, Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix is finally breaking her silence.

Just to recap: The drama began earlier this month when bartender Jax Taylor outed Madix  for “liking women” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live!

“She likes women,” Taylor grumbled when asked about Madix’s relationship with her boyfriend. He quickly followed the remark up by saying “Sorry. I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry.”

But by then the cat was already outta the bag.

When Andy Cohen asked, “You think Ariana likes women? What do you mean you didn’t mean it? You just said it,” Taylor quipped, “Just own it. That’s fine. Just don’t lie about it.”

But this wasn’t the first time Taylor has used a person’s LGBTQ identity as a weapon against them. Last November, he hurled antigay remarks at a fan on Twitter then claimed he couldn’t possibly be homophobic because he used to live in West Hollywood and 50 percent of his friends are gay.

Related: After homophobic outburst, reality star claims “50 percent” of his friends are gay

After the show aired, Madix took to Twitter to set the record straight, letting everyone know that, yeah, she’s bisexual. And so what?

“I DO like women AND men. it’s called being bisexual,” she tweeted. “Ever heard of it? #thisisnthard”

This week, Madix stopped by Watch What Happens Live! to talk about the situation. When asked how she felt about what Taylor did, she didn’t hold back.

“I thought it was really gross,” she said. “And I also thought it didn’t make any sense on any level.”

“I mean, there are lesbians who have children. There are lesbians who don’t. There are women who have children who are married. And there are women who are married who don’t. Like, none of it made any sense.” she continued.

Madix went on to say that she has been “very open and honest” about her sexuality and that it’s never been “an issue” in her life.

“And it’s certainly not an issue in my relationship,” she added, “so I think he should just chill out.”

After the episode aired Monday night, Taylor went back on the attack.

In a tweet, he called his Madix the “most negative person I have ever met” and insinuated that she hasn’t been completely forthright about her life on Vanderpump Rules.

“Must be nice to be on a show and dodge everything about your relationship life for 9 years and tell production ‘I am not talking about that’ but still wants a paycheck,” he tweeted. “That’s my response to Ariana. Most negative person I have ever met.”

Details emerge of ‘sophisticated’ new Grindr scam called “DiCaprio”

$

Grindr, location, security flaw

A new scam utilizing Grindr has managed to trick major media outlets including PBS, Fox and CBS into buying fake ads.

Dubbed the “DiCaprio” scam–no relation to Leo–the fraud works like this: Hucksters bought a regular ad on Grindr, then modified the code to look like an empty channel slot on a Roku device. They then sold the fake slot to potential advertisers, who thought they were bidding on Roku ad space. Instead, the con artists just pocketed the funds.

It’s been called “DiCaprio” because the name appears in the HTML code inserted by the fraudsters.

Palo Alto-based ad fraud detection company called Pixelate first detected the scam. CEO Jalal Nasir called the scam “one of the most sophisticated OTT [over-the-top] ad fraud schemes we have seen to date,” in a statement to BuzzFeed News. OTT fraud involves selling fake ad space.

Related: New report uncovers more bad news for Grindr… and its users

In addition to cheating buyers out of money, investigators also believe that the fake ads consumed massive amounts of Grindr user data as well as drained the batteries of their phones.

Grindr, for its part, denies any knowledge of the ad scheme. “Grindr is committed to creating a safe and secure environment to help our community connect and thrive. Any fraudulent activity is a clear violation of our and conditions and something we take very seriously,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

The ad fraud is just the latest in a litany of scandals surrounding Grindr, the popular LGBTQ dating app. The app and its Chinese corporate ownership have come under fire for selling user data to companies, tracking user movements, and allowing scams to thrive on its platform. The ownership and upper-level management of the company has also come under recent criticism for homophobia.

There’s finally an official trans flag emoji

$

A trans flag emoji is likely to soon be appearing on your phone.

Unicode, the non-profit organization responsible for defining which emojis make it onto all platforms, including iPhones, Android devices, and computers, has just unveiled new emojis approved for use.

The new symbols will be rolled out in the second half of 2020.

In total, 117 new emojis have been approved. These include a smiling face with a tear rolling down its cheek, a face that’s obviously wearing a disguise, pinched fingers, people hugging, a rainbow-colored piñata, and a ninja.

Several figure-based emojis will be available in male, female and gender-neutral forms, including someone feeding a baby, a mustached man wearing a bridal veil, and a woman wearing a tuxedo.

Related: GOP lawmakers want to ban Pride and trans flags on public buildings

On Twitter, the announcement of a trans flag emoji prompted a huge response. Unicode has also approved the transgender symbol (⚧), which is an amalgamation of the male and female signs.

Many people simply responded with a simple, “Trans rights.”

Predictably, some people took offense to the new flag emoji and used it as an excuse to voice bigotry and prejudice – which brought a swift reprimand from others.

“For trans folk being able to say ‘transgender’ in emoji and to be out and proud and let our allies visibly support us is a huge deal for our community,” said Tea Uglow, who helped co-author the proposal for the emoji, reports Mashable.

“We’re really happy to have finally crossed into mainstream culture. It’s been an amazing team effort around the world.”

Franklin Graham writes open letter to LGBTQ people: ‘We’re all sinners’

Franklin Graham

Evangelical preacher Franklin Graham’s upcoming tour of the United Kingdom faces being seriously derailed. So much so, Graham felt moved to write an open letter to LGBTQ people opposing his visit to assure them he’s not a hate preacher and claiming “My speech doesn’t hurt anybody.”

The 67-year-old, US-based pastor, son of the late Billy Graham, was due to appear at eight large towns and cities arenas around the UK later this year, kicking off in Glasgow on May, 30.

Related: Pray to keep Chick-fil-A anti-gay, says evangelist Franklin Graham

However, when news of his appearances spread, LGBTQ campaign groups began to raise their voices in protest.

As the controversy around his tour grew, the ACC Liverpool conference center was the first to cancel his appearance. It said Graham’s views were “incompatible” with the venue operator’s own.

In response, Graham took to Facebook earlier this week to publish a “letter to the LGBTQ community in the UK.”

He begins by saying, “It is said by some that I am coming to the UK to bring hateful speech to your community. This is just not true.”

Instead, he claims to be bringing only “good news” – that homosexuality is a sin, that everyone is a sinner, and we can all be forgiven by God.

“I’m not coming to the UK to speak against anybody, I’m coming to speak for everybody. The Gospel is inclusive. I’m not coming out of hate, I’m coming out of love.

“I invite everyone in the LGBTQ community to come and hear for yourselves the Gospel messages that I will be bringing from God’s Word, the Bible. You are absolutely welcome.”

Related: Brits are furious Franklin Graham is coming to England to spread anti-LGBTQ “love”

The letter has not had the desired effect. Yesterday, the 13,600-capacity Sheffield Arena also canceled his appearance, due June, 6. The venue operator said it “does not endorse” Graham’s views.

The cancellation came after 22 LGBTQ groups wrote an open letter to Sheffield City Trust, which operates the venue, protesting Graham’s visit.

Graham is known for taking every available opportunity to speak out against any advancement in LGBTQ rights.

In the past, the vocal supporter of President Donald Trump has spoken out against banning so-called conversion therapy and against same-sex marriage.

Besides the canceled dates in Liverpool and Sheffield, Graham is due to appear in Glasgow, Newcastle, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Birmingham, before returning to the UK in October to appear in London. At least one other venue is believed to be holding discussions on whether to allow his visit to go ahead.

Aaron Hernandez came out to his mother shortly before his suicide, brother claims

Rumors about Aaron Hernandez’s sexuality have been swirling ever since his suicide in 2017. Now, the former NFL superstar/convicted murderer’s bother is weighing in on the matter.

In an appearance on The Dr. Oz Show, which airs later today, Hernandez’s brother, Jonathan, says his brother came out to their mom during a tearful prison visit shortly before his death.

“He’s like, ‘Mom, you’re going yo die never knowing your son,’” Jonathan Hernandez says in his first interview since the release of the Netflix docuseries Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez.

Jonathan continues: “My mom being my mom, started mouthing with Aaron, and they started bickering back and forth, and all of a sudden they have this conversation, and they’re both flooded with tears across from each other.”

Jonathan also goes into vivid detail about their father’s abusive behavior towards the family and how if he ever learned Aaron had same-sex attractions he would have “beat that out of him.”

Jonathan’s remarks come just days after Hernandez’s fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins, told Good Morning America that she doesn’t know whether he was attracted to men.

“If he did feel that way, or if he felt the urge, I wish that I was told,” Jenkins said. “I wish that he would have told me because I wouldn’t have loved him any differently. I would have understood. It’s not shameful.”

She continued, “You can’t describe someone’s sexuality without them being here. Although I’ve had a child with Aaron, I still can’t tell you what he was feeling inside.”

Killer Inside chronicles the meteoric rise of Hernandez as a star NFL player of the New England Patriots before his shocking arrest and conviction for murder in 2013.

The series features interviews with close friends and relatives of Hernandez, including a former teammate who claims the two had a gay relationship, and suggests that Hernandez’s internalized homophobia contributed to his decaying mental state, as did drug use and brain injury.

It also hints that Hernandez may have been responsible for other murders besides that of Odin Lloyd, and that he may have killed Lloyd after he discovered Hernandez’s closeted sexuality.

Piers Morgan apologizes for calling gay men “yuppie poofs”

Piers Morgan has issued an apology following the resurfacing of a 1989 essay in which he used homophobic language.

Morgan, host of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, originally penned the op-ed in response to a same-sex kiss on the popular British soap opera EastEnders. The episode, broadcast in 1989, first showed the characters Colin Russell and Guido Smith (Michael Cashman and Nicholas Donovan) kiss. Morgan wasn’t having it.

“Furious MPs last night demanded a ban on EastEnders as the BBC soap showed two men kissing full on the lips,” he wrote in The Sun. “The homosexual love scene between yuppie poofs was screened in the early evening when millions of children were watching.” He went on to further comment on Michael Cashman being gay in real life, and quote Tory MPs who called the scene both “revolting” and “perverted.” He also questioned whether gay content should appear on TV at all.

Related: Former intern claims Piers Morgan used him to try to frame gay youth group for pedophilia

Now, 30 years on, Morgan has apologized to the British LGBTQ site PinkNews. “I’m ashamed of some of the inappropriate language I used in The Sun 30 years ago about gay stars,” he said. “They were different times, but that’s no excuse – it was offensive, it was wrong, and I apologize for it.”

To his credit, Morgan also highlighted an apology he made in 2005 for his previous anti-gay remarks, in which he did acknowledge his criticism of EastEnders, as well as attempts to out closeted stars.

Though he has come to accept gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, Morgan still continues to attack non-binary individuals. He recently ranted on Good Morning Britain that non-binary people are “damaging to society.”

India’s “Most Desirable Man” Ali Fazal goes on his first date with another man in new Netflix series

Ali Fazal is an Indian actor and model. In addition to starring in a number of Bollywood films and being declared 2014’s “Most Desirable Man” by the Times of India, he appeared in 2015’s Furious 7, the seventh installment of the Fast & The Furious franchise, and starred alongside Judi Dench in 2017’s Victoria & Abdul.

Most recently, the 33-year-old bachelor stopped by the set of Netflix India’s new dating reality series What The Love!, where he went on his first-ever date with another man. The show’s premise is pretty simple: Contestants meet with a team of celebrity coaches and style experts to help prepare them for blind dates.

Episode 3 features a man named Rabanne, who is seeking a boyfriend in Mumbai. For his “practice date,” he’s paired up with Fazal, who admits he’s never actually been on a date with another guy before, but he’s open to giving it a try if it means helping Rabanne find love.

During their “practice date,” the two engage in some flirty banter and seem to have some genuine chemistry. It ends with Rabanne saying he’s always wanted a man to lift him up in his arms, a request Fazal is happy to abide by.

Fazal shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the episode, which premiered today, with his nearly 700K Instagram followers, along with the caption: “It seems I cover my nervousness with hysterical laughter.”

Looking back on the experience, Fazal, who admits he’s been hit on by guys in the past but has never followed through with anything, explains: “To begin with, it was a very nervous experience, more for me because I’ve never been on a same sex date before. But I stayed on and was just having fun with him. I think that was quite a task and I actually feel good about it.”

As for Rabanne, later in the episode, he goes on blind dates with two different men. One of them clearly isn’t a fit, but the other–a young make up artist name Adarsh–proves to be more successful, though not without some awkwardness. Does it prove to be a match? You’ll have to watch the episode to find out.

What The Love! is available to stream on Netflix beginning today.

Rapper Pastor Troy took to Instagram to belittle his achievements in a since-deleted post, managing to incorporate homophobia, fragile masculinity and general bitterness into his comments.

“Pastor Troy went on a long, homophobic rant & somehow convinced himself that it’s the reason why he doesn’t have a Grammy,” tweeted music writer Ronald Isley, sharing screengrabs of the Instagram post:

“Welp, guess I won’t be winning a GRAMMY… if this is what I gotta wear,” Pastor Troy wrote.

“They love to push this shit on our kids!! The other day Applebees had some punks kissing and laughing eating mozzarella sticks. First thing my 14 year old son said was, ‘Fuck Applebees’, and it brought joy to my heart!!

“Integrity is priceless. Y’all better open that 3rd eye and let your sons know what is real… or they ass gone be headed down that Old Town Road foreal!!”

Lil Nax X responded to the tweet, but rather than address the comments, he focused on something much more important:

This new spinoff follows the titular would-be fashion designer as she tries to make it big in the Big Apple. Bestie Josie McCoy lends her moral support as she pursues a music career, as does Katy’s roommate Jorge, an aspiring drag queen and Broadway dancer. Jorge’s uber-femininity also becomes a major focus for his season one story. More stylish and adult than its mother series, Katy Keene idealizes New York as a magical wonderworld a-la The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Call it a tween Sex and the City, with its own brand of charm.

Premieres February 6 on The CW.

The Unexpected: Merli

This popular Spanish sitcom lands stateside on Netflix, bringing with it its distinctive blend of teen angst and midlife crisis panic. Mirli follows the down-on-his-luck story of philosophy teacher Mirli Bergeron, a man evicted from his apartment and forced to live with his aging actress mother. When he lands a job at a local high school, Mirli becomes something of a pariah for his unorthodox teaching methods, and an unpaid psychoanalyst to his students. That includes his most outspoken student, his gay dancer son Bruno. Merli plays like a Spanish version of Head of the Class or Dead Poets Society, anchored by a fine performance by Fransec Orella in the lead role. Bruno’s coming out and love life take center stage in the first season. As such, we think the show is worth a look.

Streams on Netflix.

The Weird: October Faction

Anyone craving a bit more Sabrina or Umbrella Academy, look no further than this new Netflix series about a family of monster hunters. Veteran slayers Fred & Deloris return to Fred’s New England hometown to find it infested with creepers…and a bunch of monsters too. We have a hard time describing October Faction: it qualifies as both a dark comedy and a horror series. Regardless, we have a hard time resisting the show thanks to Fred & Deloris son Geoff (played by Gabriel Darku), a hellraising (in every sense of the term) gay boy more phased by his libido than the monster squad.

Streams on Netflix

The ICYMI: Adam

The acclaimed indie film arrives on Hulu this week, bringing with it all the big laughs and big questions that helped it enchant audiences at Sundance. The movie follows its title character, a teen who goes to spend the summer with his sister in New York. There he falls for a beautiful young lesbian (played by Julianne Moore doppelganger Bobbi Menuez)…so he poses as a trans man to win her affections. Adam encountered criticism for its premise—largely before release, mind you—as did the novel upon which it’s based. In the hands of director Rhys Ernst, a transgender man, the film treats its subject matter with care and sensitivity. Menuez and lead actor Nicholas Alexander give winning performances, as does Leo Sheng in his acting debut. Love it or hate it, Adam continues the ongoing conversation about transgender visibility, and deserves a look.

Now on Hulu. Also streams on Amazon, iTunes, Vudu & YouTube.

The Jam: “Boss Bitch” on the Birds of Prey Soundtrack

With Margot Robbie prepared to return to her signature role of Harley Quinn and Ewan McGregor starring as her gay nemesis Black Mask in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, we can’t help but recommend this hip-hop ditty that screams out for a drag makeover. Doja Cat channels her inner comic book character—a good look for anyone—opposite the ladies of Birds including Robbie, Ali Wong and Rosie Perez in a surreal, smokey, brightly colored video. Trust us when we say it’s worth watching just for the outrageous costumes and production design…which may or may not have us coming up with a few variations to add to our own wardrobe rotation.

Video streams on YouTube. Soundtrack available February 7.

The Sip: The Sweet Nothing Sipper

With February looming, we can’t help but think about Valentine’s Day…and how badly we need a drink since we’re spending yet another year single. This week’s solution: a Sweet Nothing Sipper. This fizzy, sweet cocktail will have you ready to whisper sweet nothings to the object of your affection…or at least ready to cope with the sweet nothing in your love life.

  • 3 ounces pink Moscato
  • ½ ounce amaretto
  • 1 ½ ounces cherry juice

Combine amaretto and juice in a cocktail shaker over ice. Shake well. Strain into a tall glass. Top off with Moscato.

Trump’s border wall blown over by light breeze, Twitter responds accordingly

Perhaps you’ve heard that a portion of Donald Trump’s border wall collapsed yesterday after it was unable to withstand extreme wind gusts… of 37 MPH.

The collapse happened in Calexico, California shortly after Trump held a rally in New Jersey where he lied about how “beautiful” and “powerful” his new wall was.

“We are now building that beautiful wall,” Trump said. “This powerful border wall is going up at record speed, and we just reached over 100 miles of wall. And next year we’ll be over 400 miles. And shortly thereafter it will be complete.”

And now, the responses…

Even Ann Coulter, author of In Trump We Trust, isn’t pleased about this wall business:

Someone please remind us… Is this what winning looks like?
